CIO Myths

One of the biggest myths about CIOs (often perpetrated by CIOs themselves) is that if you don’t report to the CEO, you’re essentially a bit player in the organization. While I have seen cases when CIOs are put under the CFO in an effort to keep IT costs down and little else, I’ve also seen a few CIO/CFO combinations that have been extremely effective. In particular, when the CIO can approach leadership with a project that has the financial backing and savvy of the CFO, it’s a far more winning combination than a CIO pitching a new idea “solo.” Like any relationship this takes work to grow, but I think CIOs have done themselves a disservice by considering a reporting relationship to the CFO to be an instant death sentence.
